The Illusion of Project Management

Do not let the provocative title mislead you. My aim is to deconstruct the traditional concept of project management in order to reveal a reality that is too often ignored: the key to success lies in managing people, not projects as such.
▸ The central realisation: you lead individuals, not projects
A project, in essence, is an abstract entity made of several elements: an objective to reach, a team responsible for achieving it, a way of measuring the work done, and a frame of reference. What you actually lead are the individuals who bring the project to life.
In practice, that means you can and should track how a project evolves, assess the team's progress, and anticipate potential obstacles.
▸ Practical implications
Adopting this perspective leads to a more human and more effective management approach. Traditional project management, characterised by rigid methods such as Gantt charts, is well known for its ineffectiveness. It rests on the mistaken idea that a project manager, armed with planning tools, can control the project's parameters at will: quality, cost, deadlines. That reductive view turns team members into pawns, with no regard for their individuality or their well-being.
Such a model is not only a source of frustration and delay, it also compromises the quality of the work delivered.
▸ Towards human-centred management
The answer lies in management that pays attention to the needs and the skills of the men and women involved in the project. Once that principle is internalised, the benefits are many: individual talents are put to better use, delays shrink thanks to inclusive planning, quality improves through close collaboration from the earliest phases of the project, documentation becomes relevant and genuinely useful, and people stay because their professional development receives sincere attention.
▸ A paradigm shift needed at every level
It is crucial that this understanding reaches every level of management. A project manager can try to create a favourable environment within their own team, but without broad adherence to these principles across the company, individual efforts will inevitably run into insurmountable obstacles. Only when all managers share this vision can the benefits last.
